So I finally beat Super Mario 3D Land…

At first I wanted to write off this game as being less than the ‘true’ 3D Marios like SM64, Sunshine and Galaxy 1 and 2. This was more of a casual spin off of the franchise, I said. Boy, was I in for a rude awakening, first when I beat Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U a few months ago and then once more having now beaten Super Mario 3D Land today.

This game is as pure and true of a Mario game as can be. It sets itself apart from the rest of the series while still keeping what’s exciting about both the 2D and 3D Mario games simultaneously. This third pillar of the Mario games is equally exciting.

The levels are as creative and well paced as they are in the Galaxy games. New mechanics are seamlessly introduced and they keep the game fresh level to level. The controls have a 2D Mario feel because of the ‘run’ button that is absent from the 3D series of Mario games. Also, the spin manuver is gone and for the better. In the Galaxy games and 2D console Mario games the spin manuver, although intergral to a good chunk of gameplay, can be used too often to get you out of a sticky situation. You could use it to redirect your jumps in mid air making platforming sometimes too forgiving. In 3D Land you are more accountable for your jumps and it makes the game more rewarding.

Another interesting thing about this series is that you rarely ever use the camera. The game leads you in the right direction without ever having to adjust where Mario is looking. All you have to do is play.

The graphics are incredibly polished and the 3D effect makes everything pop. It doesn’t bother my eyes one bit. The 3DS xl is an incredible system that I will one day buy. (I borrowed my friends) Being able to play old DS games with the analog pad and larger screens is also a major plus. I’ve already re-bought 3 original DS games.

I never thought I would say this, but Super Mario 3d Land is every bit as good as the Galaxy games. I even enjoyed it more than 3D World on the Wii U. I am more blown away by the 3DS XL than I currently am with my Wii U and PS4. What an amazing console and game. Just wanted to share.
